Remember how in the film “The Crown of the Russian Empire or Elusive Again” the foreign tourist on board the captured liner explains how the Russians behave” “All Russians play the balalaikas.”
If you do not agree with this thesis, then welcome to the German romantic comedy "Russendisko" (2012), which for some reason we called "I'm normally super good", which, in turn, is a quote from the song by Sergei Shnurov and the group "Leningrad".
The film "Russian Disco" was completely filmed by the Germans. Russian roots are visible in the literary basis: based on the autobiographical collection of short stories by Vladimir Kaminer of the same name.
10 year deliberation
The plot tells about the life of three emigrants from the Soviet Union who moved to Germany in the infamous 90s. The picture is based on real events: the life of Vladimir Kaminer, who managed to become a popular writer in Germany. True, he is known mainly for small feuilletons. At first, Vladimir worked as a DJ and organized Russian discos. Gradually, he gained popularity, began to take part in TV shows.
Babelsberg acquired the rights to Kaminer's collection of short stories in 2000. For a long time they tried to combine individual stories into a single plot that the audience had to like. After more than a decade of deliberation, a script called "Russian Disco" came out. And then director Oliver Ziegenbalg made the film.
Fall of the Berlin Wall
The film takes place at a time when the Berlin Wall had just fallen, and the GDR opened its borders to Soviet Jews to compensate for their passivity in paying compensation to victims of the Holocaust. And so Alyosha, Misha and Vladimir decided to seize the moment, hoping to find a happy future in a foreign country. They settled in a hostel for emigrants next to Albanians, gypsies, Vietnamese, located in East Berlin. Three friends sold beer, arranged discos and constantly got into trouble.
touching moments
Touching moments pass through the whole film: Russian songs with a German accent, Cord with the song of the same name, relatively good jokes, our reality is not greatly distorted.
One of the critics wrote about the film: "There is no spreading cranberry, no aggression, no stereotypes, no arrogance, no tension." The funny thing is that for some reason there is a reference to Chekhov and the Three Sisters, which the author himself defined as vaudeville. I am sure that here, too, the author was counting on talking to the audience about something serious, sublime and non-everyday, but ...
Missed Opportunities
The creators could make a work of art about the unusual life of three young men away from their father's house during times of change, dressing it all in an atmosphere of comedy. But the plot was based on predictable love stories. The main characters were played by the Germans, who are not very similar to immigrants from the USSR. There are a lot of clichés and stereotyped situations in the picture. The plot is easily predictable. The authors could have approached this more responsibly.
In the end, a not outstanding film appeared, but at the same time you can watch it by giving this creation a four. You can make allowances for the fact that the film turned out to be a debut for director Oliver Ziekenbalg, but there is nothing sadder than a creative work that does not hurt the living. And the last thing: the rating of the picture on Kinopoisk is not bad - 6.5.
